Christophe
Brech
Red Cloud
vidéo, 12’, 2003, Allemagne
Munich based and internationally exhibited artist
Christoph Brech has won major prizes for his art
in public space and, more recently, for his video
work. His poetic videos capture significant moments
and try to sustain them, to make them memorable.
Brech´s conceptual videos evoke rites of passage,
commemoration and critique. If it is an unsparing
art, it is also an inordinately eloquent one of
avowal and overcoming.
In Red Cloud, a captivating meditation on time and
subjectivity, Brech films a segment of rural landscape
in Nebraska from a passing car. The landscape in
question is between Kearney, the absolute geographical
center of the United States, and Red Cloud, a small
town nearby, where Pulitzer-Prize winning author
Willa Cather spent her formative years and located
so many of her novels and short stories.

Sophie
Solnychkine
Der Himmel und die Erde
vidéo, 3' 20'', 2004, France
Born in Toulouse in 1981, Sophie Solnychkine began
her artistic activity in 1999. She has been expanding
her explorations through a variety of activities:
plastic artist, exhibition curator and theoretical
researcher.
Der Himmel und die Erde (video) is the result of a
questionning of the real, which through a contemporary
approach to landscape, seeks to give a personal meaning
to the world. The fragility and precariousness of
the projected image reveal a subtle and minute back-and-forth
movement between fiction and reality.

Francis
Montillaud
Décharge Maximale
vidéo, 11’, 2003, Québec
My inspiration and my fields of interest are drawn
from my experiences with the outside world, whether
it be that of mass culture or the life of a mere individual.
I am interested in the different strata of society,
from those who control, those who execute and those
who hang on to those that drop out. Digital technologies
have been very useful to express this representation
of the world. I work a lot with photographs taken
during my travels or everyday life. These are fragments
of reality which surprise me and which I afterwards
rework into my videos.
A moment where everything seems artificially natural
thanks to the incredible effects of the industrial.
Artificial light and dysfunctional activity leading
to a transformation of the real.

Hillary
Mushkin
The sleep of reason
vidéo, 5’52, 2003, USA
Hillary Mushkin lives in Los Angeles. Her videos,
photographs, and installations have been exhibited
internationally. Her work combines video and animation
to explore how illusions created by technology, media,
and personal desire affect us.
This projection conflates hand drawn, computer generated
and live action images related to the bombings of
Baghdad. It is an uneasy meditation on the irreconcilable
disconnection between the mediated experience of war
and the authentic event it portrays.

Lise-Hélène
Larin & Simon-Pierre Gourd
Mirage ou la nature algorythmique
vidéo, 6’, 2003, Québec
Lise-Hélène Larin, is a multidisciplinary
artist and researcher. She teaches painting and drawing
at Concordia University. She received a scholarship
for her 3D animation research in which she explores
abstraction. Her use of multiple transparent screens
creates a new link between image and turns 3D animation
away from the narrative and simulation function it
inherited from cinema.
Simon-Pierre Gourd have made the sound for the vidéo.
He creates sound in different domains : acoustic music,
sound creation for cinema, radio, television, and
new media.
6th of a series of 7animation movies 3D non-figurative,
named PAINTING BY NUMBERS, this film evokes heat,
colour, and natural light. Its consists in a virtual
vegetation that becomes a mirage in the cold and dark
desert of cement. The original music of Simon-Pierre
Gourd contributes to the immersion feeling of space
and movement by his sensation of circular heights
and paradox tones provoked by synesthesia and simultaneous
perception. |
